Municipality

Welcome to St. Moritz. Here, 150 years ago, winter tourism was born. St. Moritz is one of the most stunning holiday destinations in the Alps, appealing to lovers of luxury and sport from all over the world. Today, as before, the region is characterised by an innovative spirit, while also attracting tourists with its invigorating, salutary climate and the extraordinary beauty of its landscape. Its mineral springs were already known back in the Bronze Age, more than 3,400 years ago, as shown by the dating of the prehistoric St.Mauritius spring tapping. However, it was not until 1856, when the first Kulm Hotel was opened, that the destination really began to take off. Thanks to a bet made between Johannes Badrutt, a pioneering hotelier in St. Moritz, and four of his guests in September 1864, it also became established as a winter sports destination. And thanks to many innovative locals and visitors, St. Moritz has also been the birthplace of numerous inventions, including the first electric light (Christmas 1878), the first motorised flight in Switzerland (1910), and the first ski lift (1935). In 1930, St. Moritz was the first place to have a logo (the St. Moritz sun) registered as a trademark. The lettering with its logo (St. Moritz TOP OF THE WORLD) has been trademark protected since 1986. St. Moritz is known for its iconic leaning tower – the remains of the 16th century Church of St. Mauritius, which was damaged in the 19th century. Other attractions include the Segantini Museum, which houses many works by artist Giovanni Segantini, and the Museum Engiadinais, which exhibits collections relating to cultural history and folklore.
